Lew sent us photos of the original Bravo sign and patch. Here are his comments regarding the creation of the patch.
As far as the patch is concerned, when we weren't in the field I had a sketch book that I doodled in (mostly cartoonish things) so I was asked if I could design a patch just for Bravo Co.. At the time we were in Can Giuoc (SP?), 1969. I think my platoon sergeant, Sgt. Hayworth, was the one who initially asked me. I had gone to school for graphic design so I said yes. I don't remember who approved it, but there were certain things they wanted on it, one in particular was the motto, 'NO SWEAT'. I drew the bear firing an M60 machine gun, with the motto on what would have been the amo belt. I wanted the bear to look big and mean, kind of in the style of the WW2 insignias. The original drawing was clearer and more detailed than the finished patch. I don't know where the actual patches were made (in country or out) but the finished quality wasn't very good. I guess they interpreted my drawing the best they could. Unfortunately I don't have any of the original sketches. I haven't seen one remaining patch yet that didn't have a pinkish tinge to the background. That's because when they got wet the thread colors bled into the originally white background. I have only one patch and all of its colors have bled so badly that it's very difficult to tell what it is. At the same time I also created the 'BRAVO' sign that hung on Bravo HQ in Can Giuoc. I've attached two photos (not the best quality, but all I have) of it, one is a close up and the other is with me above it. It shows more detail of what the Bravo bear looked like but in this case he's holding an M16. The hawk was to signify our 'Hawk Squads'. They were small groups (squads) of guys who went out into the field on there own. Very brave guys. After finishing the sign I was given an in country R&R to Vung-Tau for my efforts.
